“We Haven’t Laid Anyone Off”: Is It Possible Not To Lay Off During a Recession?

So, as the week-end is also the time for reflection… And for looking around, I came across an interesting web site. www.wehaventlaidanyoneoff.com is a site that prides itself on quoting companies that take an engagement not to lay any of their employees off for one year.

The company itself got some attention on CNN:

The idea sounds interesting in promoting a more respectful approach to the employees and mitigating the effects of a recession. However, it is worth noticing that while (due probably to the nationality of the creator), it seems especially targeted to New Zealand, there are in the end few companies present on his web site.

While the idea is nice, the lack of success (a little over twenty companies have taken the commitment) seems to tell that it is impracticable in a prolonged recession.

On a more comical plane, I especially loved the comment of one of the firms :

Our business is about laying people to rest not laying people off. We lay
people to rest with dignity and compromising on the costs involved to do
that, due to a recession, is not in line with our company values.

After all it is the same company that tells you on their web  site:

When you puchase a plot at Auckland Memorial Park, you are making an investment in eternity

And no, the stock of Auckland Memorial Park is not publicly traded.

Great idea for a site. Unrealistic? I would hope not! I for one would like my boss to join so I would feel relaxed about not losing my job. Good on the creator for trying something different in these dreadful economic times.

First up, thanks for supporting my site. I hope if your company hasn’t laid anyone off you’ll drop me an email. It’s absolutely free to join. My aim is to find the Good Guys everywhere! This recession is the pits, but there are companies who have managed to retain staff – and profit. And they need to be celebrated.
